The Fool shows a child or youth, while the Magician depicts an all powerful adept. Just as the Fool showed us the price of eternal innocence, so this Magician gives us the fearsomeness of taking on responsibility. If the Major Arcana represents the Fool’s journey, the Magician is the first thing the Fool encounters.

Like Deunan Knute in Appleseed Ex Machina, Eve the lead female character in LaMB will also be dolled up by a well-known designer from the fashion industry. Eve (when she’s wearing something) will be clothed in two dresses designed by New York-based Vivienne Tam.

Eve in her Little Black Dress

For her first number, Eve’s little black dress bears Vivienne Tam’s Oriental chic signature: cloud-like motifs embossed throughout, characterised by shoulder seams ending in a peak.

For her second change, Eve will be wearing a long-sleeved jacket with a collar worn over a short black dress with a ruffled collar for a ‘soft’ yet ‘militaristic’ look and feel.

Eve the OL

Otherwise, it’s pretty fitting for the OL look.

Both dresses are part of Vivienne Tam’s Fall/Winter 2008 Collection. Tying in with LaMB’s premier in March 2009, Animax will be showcasing these two dresses at LaMB launch events across Asia.

Vivienne Tam is the latest fashion designer involved in animation character designs. Miuccia Prada was first noted for designing Deunan Knute’s costumes in Ex Machina. Anna Sui designed the costumes for the final episode of Gankutsuou (巌窟王).

According to Vivienne Tam, “Getting involved in an animation production is definitely a first for me, and it’s something that sounds too exciting for me to turn down. Designing for ‘real’ and ‘reel’ presented very different
challenges, but I had a lot of fun doing it. I can’t wait to see how the dresses turn out on screen in animated form!

The first part of LaMB will premier on 24 March 2009 at 2000hrs (Singapore time), and the second part will be shown on 31 March at the same time. You can catch the making of on 17 March at 2000hrs.
