The Fool shows a child or youth, while the Magician depicts an all powerful adept. Just as the Fool showed us the price of eternal innocence, so this Magician gives us the fearsomeness of taking on responsibility. If the Major Arcana represents the Fool’s journey, the Magician is the first thing the Fool encounters.

Cosafe’s First Anniversary Party

Cosafe celebrated her first anniversary with a cosplay party on 12 December. That evening, the cast on duty became hot-blooded incarnations of anime characters.

Camille, May, Sheryl, Livia and Nana

Roze’n Meidos: Camille, May, Sheryl, Livia & Nana

The only ‘meido’ that evening is Camille, who turned into a maid serving in the Nakabayashi household in “He Is My Master” 「これが私の御主人様」. May became a character from one of CLAMP’s works (you gotta help me identify that, I don’t read stuff by CLAMP). Sheryl turned into Feng Feiling (鳳妃玲/フェン・フェイリン) from “Gate Keepers” 「ゲートキーパーズ」. Livia became Li Meiling (李苺鈴), a character from CLAMP’s “Cardcaptor Sakura“「カードキャプターさくら」 while Nana became the neko version of Sakura Kinomoto (木之本桜) with a really moé choker bell. The the moélicious cast were holding roses presented by the otakus from the SG Anime Blogger community.

That night, Cosafe played anime songs in the background. Even Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” had an anime ring to it. Nice Boat. Purists might argue if the cast were cosplaying at all, because cosplaying isn’t about putting on a ‘fancy dress’ – the cosplayer has to “get into character” to qualify as cosplaying. I’d give points to the cast that night for at least knowing the name of the character that they cosplayed, and also the anime that the character was from.

The SG Anime Bloggers and some otakus congratulated Cosafe on her first anniversary with a bouquet of flowers. The bouquet was provided by Flower Genius, the florist at Sunshine Plaza. I’ve gotten flowers from that florist before and they’ve always done a great job.

Congratulations & Best Wishes. May your meidos be moé always!

Being the eldest (erojiji) among them, I was the one to present the rose to Kathleen. So the task of presenting the flowers to the cast fell on the shoulders of the shonen otakus. There were only five Cosafe meido-in-disguise on duty, I had them pick lots among themselves to win the honour of presenting the roses. And here’s the line-up:

Windbell x Camille (hey, the names rhyme…)

Stifler x May

MistaYoh x Sheryl

Double x Livia

DarkMirage x Nana

You can feel the awkwardness when they’re lined up. My younger brothers were too shy to look at the gorgeous cast…

Hazukashii....

Double looks stressed

Blush

DarkMirage is doing the hazukashii~ thing and looks away

What have we gotten ourselves into?

Windbell making final adjustments to his camera. The ladies are getting impatient.

Guys, it’s impolite to keep the ladies waiting….

And here’s how it went:

Rose rose I love you

玫瑰,玫瑰,我爱你

Stifler can’t seem to let go….And from where I was standing, I could hear the doki doki of the boys hearts. I was also worrying for the guys, hoping that they don’t fumble or drop the rose in cold sweat.

sigh of relief

Smiles all around. Windbell was blushing real hard off screen.

I wonder what were on the ladies’ minds when we did it. Maybe “What a bunch of dorks…” For Stilfer, it was the most embarrassing moment of his life. If these happened, I guess I had to be the one to blame because I was the one who came up with the idea.

Roze'n Maidens
tsun-tsun Sheryl

Really gorgeous cast from Cosafe

We hoped the girls liked the roses. At least they looked happy when they smiled for the camera. Perhaps Sheryl is doing the tsun-tsun thing….(MOÉ!!!!). Even our actions might appear awkward, I hope the girls don’t misunderstand our intention. The girls deserved something special on that day. Flowers is one of the best way of showing thanks. It was a gesture of appreciation from the otaku community, for them having to put up with all our ogling and requests for photographs.

When we first tried to take a group photo, the younger ones all clustered at the other end. It’s like so, 男女授受不亲...I guess this perpetuates the perception that the otakus are a shy, introverted bunch. I re-arranged the distribution.

Double froze up and increased the power of his AT Field

The cast from Cosafe looked really photogenic. They light up when they do their stuff in front of the camera.

Hexlord and Windbell

Hexlord & Windbell

Also present at the event was Hexlord, a photographer who has a special interest in cosplay and figurine photography. Hexlord already knows some of the staff at Cosafe, and the whole night he was able to get them to pose and take pictures of them. If you browsed his gallery, you’ll know why the girls have confidence in letting him take their pictures.

萌!!!

Windbell and I felt Orz….Windbell emo’d while I finished another bottle of Erdinger. Among them, its hard to pick a favourite because all of them look so lovely in their own way. But if I was around TJ Han’s age and single, I’d be thinking of ways to go after one of them.

You can catch the meidos in full swing on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Cosafe will be operating till 6am in the morning. Ferlyn will be back in Singapore and she’ll be at Cosafe in costume. I’m sure she’ll be bringing back with her the experience she’d gained in Tokyo, and you can listen to her adventure stories there.

That night at Cosafe, I wore one of my most beng COSPA t-shirt, the Gundam 0083 tee featuring GP-02 on the back and the word “義”on the front:

義

This has to be the most Ah Beng feature. Any t-shirts with the Chinese characters “忠” or “義” are Ah Being in taste by default.

ソロモンよ私は帰ってきたあ

ソロモンよ私は帰ってきたあ

Even the design on the back looked rather Beng. But I like. I got that t-shirt from KKnM. Even at their usual retail price, the COSPA t-shirts are a worthwhile buy because when compared to getting them in Japan. I’ve made it a point to wear my COSPA t-shirts whenever I attend otaku-related events.

It’s really great to see Cosafe doing well. There might be some hiccups a year ago when they first started. Within a year, Cosafe learnt and improved on its operations and services. After visiting some of the maid cafes in Akihabara, I feel that Cosafe has become comparable with some of them. Cosafe is one of the places where I can bring my Japanese otaku friends to.
