YELLOW PERIL
Amazing. Ain’t it. This rap simply captures the essence of Chinese descendants living in non-Singaporean Southeast Asia (perhaps less Brunei). Not only do they (and some other “none-native” ethnic groups) have to deal with the systematic discrimination, there’s also discrimination among their own kind.
The Muar Chinese (who’re mostly Hokkiens) are discriminated by the KL Chinese (who speak mostly Cantonese). Cantonese is the only dialect that receives air time on national TV and radio in Malaysia – thus making that dialect the ‘mandarin’ dialect. In Singapore and Penang, Hokkien is the dominant dialect. If Singapore hadn’t separated from Malaysia back in 1965, would we be proudly speaking 麻坡的华语? Singaporeans can identify Malaysian Chinese by their accent when they speak “Mandarin” (aka Hua-yu/华语).
But what really is “Mandarin”? The current ’standard Mandarin’ spoken in China and Singapore is but a Beijing dialect that became the official tongue in 1949!
The 58 years of “普通话” (Putonghua) or 现代标准汉语 as standard language is but a blip in the entire Chinese history
And so it is in the existence of Taiwan – it’s be just a blip in the history of the Chinese civilisation. It’s truly a piece of 鼻屎 when juxtaposed next to the Mainland. That’s why the PRC government can bide its time. And time isn’t on Taiwan’s side…in time to come, China’s undisrupted growth will compel it to fall under the mainland’s influence by virtue of gravity. Not only do I agree with Shoichi Nakagawa that Japan could become a province of China, I would include Korea too. I treat Japanese as a Chinese dialect (phonetically, its similar to some Chinese dialect) and thus its easier to learn. But I digress…
Its all a matter of politics.
As how “明志” puts it – “语言没有票准性只有地方性”…which is true. But he misses the fact that “权力就是标准的定义, 这就是实际的道理”. I would put it to him – “要我讲你厉害就让麻坡华语来赚纸字”
(There’s definitely wit in his style. I wouldn’t be surprised that 明志 become the next Chinese music sensation after 阿牛 – 陈庆祥, ‘cept that his choice of words aren’t exactly national-radio friendly)
